President Donald Trump has issued a strong endorsement for Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race, urging residents to back the former governor instead of “Communist Candidate” Zohran Mamdani or Curtis Sliwa, the New York Post reports. Trump emphasized that voting for Sliwa would effectively bolster Mamdani’s bid, whom he has repeatedly criticized as a “communist” and “inexperienced.” In a series of remarks, including posts on social media and public statements, Trump described the contest as a situation where New Yorkers “have no choice” but to support Cuomo, hoping he would perform well as mayor despite any personal reservations.
Trump expressed a clear preference for Cuomo, currently running as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary, arguing that he has a “record of success” compared to Mamdani, who he labeled a “complete and total failure” as an assemblyman. The President also threatened to restrict federal funding to the city if Mamdani were to win, declaring that New York would face a “complete and total economic and social disaster” under Mamdani’s leadership.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad. It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”
“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump added.
Trump further asserted that anti-Mamdani votes should not be split, suggesting that Sliwa’s continued candidacy only benefits Mamdani.
“We must also remember this — A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump wrote.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” the President added. “You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”
This moment is a rare alignment where Trump, despite previous tensions with Cuomo, is siding with him to block a candidate too radical for New York City. This strong endorsement marks Trump’s most direct involvement in the race, framing it as a critical decision for the city’s future and a potential precursor for broader national political dynamics.
