New York Democrats woke up Wednesday to the political world they spent a year insisting could never arrive. On Tuesday night, three avowed socialists backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani swept the city’s House Democratic primaries — toppling sitting congressmen, gutting the party’s old guard, and turning Mamdani’s anti-capitalist, anti-Israel movement into a machine that now runs the table, according to the New York Post.
The carnage was total. Former Comptroller Brad Lander knocked off incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District. In the 13th, Democratic Socialists of America–backed Darializa Avila Chevalier pulled an AOC-style upset over longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat. And in the 7th, Mamdani-endorsed Rep. Claire Valdez buried Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso by more than 20 points. Three races, three socialists, one message to the Democratic establishment: your time is up.
Even the party’s own cheerleaders couldn’t spin it. “The roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment tonight,” CNN commentator Van Jones admitted on the network’s election-night coverage. He went further, conceding the left had built something the moderates can no longer contain. “This is no longer a movement. This is a movement and a machine at the same time,” Jones said. “And there’s just no way to sugarcoat this: if Mamdani pulls off a hat trick this is a new era in Democratic Party politics.”
A new era, indeed — one built on candidates who campaigned to abolish ICE, abolish the police, and abolish the border. So who, exactly, is going to stand in the way? Not the people who just lost.
It fell to Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), of all Democrats, to say out loud what his colleagues are too frightened to whisper. Speaking to Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Fetterman didn’t reach for the usual unity boilerplate. “This has become the dancing days of the dirtbag left,” he said.
He wasn’t finished. “Some of these candidates are outrageous. You have candidates, they [want to] abolish ICE, abolish police, abolish the border,” Fetterman warned, pointing to Chevalier’s deleted 2021 post trashing Kamala Harris in expletive-laced terms. “She even said ‘f Kamala Harris’ and more of these outrageous kinds of things.”
Then there is the foreign-policy rot. Fetterman ripped Mamdani for publicly “grieving” Al Jazeera figure Ahmed Wishah — killed in an Israeli airstrike, and identified by the IDF as a Hamas triggerman — and branded the winning bloc the “full pro-Hamas wing” that has effectively declared “war on regular Democrats.” When the most blue-collar senator in the caucus is sounding the alarm, the firehouse is already in flames.
For an audience that has watched blue-city socialism cash out one promise after another — the free buses that ran out of money, the billion-dollar grocery schemes, the budgets that never balance — Tuesday’s sweep is the logical next chapter. The radicals didn’t storm the Democratic Party. They were invited in, handed the keys, and waved through the door. The dancing has only just begun. Let that sink in.
