No, the New Pope Wasn’t Elected to Spite Trump — Media Fantasies vs. Catholic Reality

One of the more egregious examples of Trump Derangement Syndrome is the excitement amongst the liberal media about the election of Robert Prevost to become Pope Leo IV. They are thrilled about Leo, not because he is a holy and good man capable of leading the Catholic Church, but because they imagine he will be a firm opponent of President Trump.

Consider this comment from The Economist: the election of Robert Prevost “smacks of outright defiance of Donald Trump & his aggressive nationalism.” What does that even mean? My view- this pope was chosen in spite of his being an American, not because of his birth in Chicago. He is viewed as a moderate in church politics, firmly opposing abortion and seemingly against same-sex marriage (according to an interview from 2012) but simultaneously embracing Pope Francis’ concern about the environment and for migrants and the poor.

Remember (because the media won’t remind you) that it was Donald Trump who stood up for the Little Sisters of the Poor, winning a Supreme Court decision in their favor and who has showed sympathy for the pro-life movement. He also traveled to meet Francis. Consider Joe Biden’s attacks on religious freedom and embrace of abortion and same-sex marriages. Who really is more supportive of the Catholic church?

We’ll see how Leo develops in this role- a lot is unknown. But he is apparently a diplomat and an effective administrator; the idea that he was chosen as an antagonist to Trump is, like so much garbage from the Left, nonsense.
