It is hard to underestimate the intelligence of Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Having initially expressed (muted) enthusiasm for President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops, FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies to patrol the streets of crime-infested Washington, D.C., she then turned turtle to denounce the move as “unsettling and unprecedented.”
Now she has flip-flopped again, as the presence of the troops has proven effective in driving down crime, literally overnight.
“We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city”, now says the confused mayor.
She posted on X: Let me be clear: “The surge of federal resources should be focused on violent crime in our city.” Um, what else would it be focused on? Yes, the troops are helping clean up the city, too, and helping tourists with directions – all popular with the citizens of the District; but mainly, they are all but eliminating crime, for which the entire city should say “thank you”.
But here’s the quote of the day from Mayor Bowser: “We know that when carjackings go down, when use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer.” Hard to deny that bit of logic.
A recent AP-NORC poll is out showing that the vast majority — 81% — of Americans think crime is a “major problem” in large cities. That includes 68% of Democrats and 72% of Independents. Here’s the poll.
Further, 66% say crime is a major problem for our entire country – a survey result that didn’t get much notice.
Also- most Americans (55%) think the use of federal forces like the National Guard is “completely or somewhat” acceptable to reduce that crime, torching the Dem narrative that people view Trump’s approach as (yet another) assault on our democracy.
Most people think crime is a problem because we’ve seen a slew of legislators and legislation that coddles criminals (Raise the Age laws, cashless bail etc) at the expense of citizens. When you go to shop at your local CVS and find the shelves covered with plastic guards to deter shoplifting – thievery that is out of control because woke DAs like Alvin Bragg won’t enforce the law – it is infuriating.
Trump is right to engage with this concern. It is smart politically and it is the right thing to do for our nation.
Bottom line: Democrats are once again landing on the wrong side of an 80-20 issue, just as they have on deporting criminal aliens, closing our border, and allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports.
You have to admire their consistency!
